In 1999 my daughter Claire and I dreamt up the idea of doing the London to Brighton Classic car Run, starting from Syon Park.We joined the assembled enthusiasts from all over the UK and Western Europe on a fine June morning. The vast variety of marques of v
arious conditions and ages was amazing. The first such race took place 20 years ago. Not before long we were set upon by a Camera crew requesting an interview. I suppose beauty before age and experience took precedence so my daughter answered the questions which were fired at her. I just nodded in agreement with her answers, which I must say, I could not dispute. Shortly afterwards each of the cars were ceremoniously sent off with a wave of the Union Jack every 10 seconds. 
The route took us through some of the most beautiful villages and unspoilt country roads. Some of the scenery was absolutely stunning. Along the way we stopped
at Leonardslee, a fantastic woodlands garden where we had a leisurely picnic. Here, we were interviewed again., “ What do you think of it so far?" That sort of stuff.

The weather was fine so far and so was the navigator! However as we reached Ditchling Beacon, the heavens opened. The hood went up quickly. We soon arrived at Madeira Drive and joined the participating vehicles to make up a spectacular display.

Yes, the camera crew were waiting for the final interview with us and the other two drivers they were following. The finishshed product was shown on Meridian TV as part of a series on Classic Cars and I believe a few years ago on Sky TV on Boxing Day.
